Med Micro Intro

Good afternoon.  I am Barbara Boswell, your instructor for MLT 2320, Medical Microbiology.  This semester we will be learning about immunology, serology, and microorganisms of importance to humans.  Our first four weeks will be instruction in immunology and serology.  In the next two weeks we will cover parasitology.  Mycology, the study of fungi, will follow.  The remainder of the semester we will spend in bacteriology.  I will teach you characteristics of each group of bacteria and we will perform the common laboratory tests used to identify them.  Then we will move into the “real world” of the bacteriology lab.  I will give you specimens from different body sites.  You will inoculate them onto the appropriate media, incubate them, and identify the different bacteria that grow.  In addition, you will perform antimicrobial susceptibility tests.
