Applied Basic Mathematics Experiences. In trying to understand measurements in the Developmental Studies Basic Mathematics classes, the class will volunteer to participate in weekend Habitat for Humanity construction project. Each class member will come prepared to work in an area wherein they are completely comfortable. In other words, if you are uncomfortable with heights, you will not be asked to climb a ladder. The primary focus for students will be on using actual mathematical functions that are used on a construction site such as measuring and cutting lumber, siding, and etc. Students will also participate by drawing lines accurately for cutting purposes and selecting the proper tools to ensure accuracy. Students will also be required to participate in actual installation using conventional and power tools. During the installation of exterior siding, the students will be required to insert installation clips specifically at two feet apart. This requires them to be able to read the tape measure accurately and make the appropriate marks on the wall for clip insertion. This activity will have a dual purpose. It provides an actual applied learning experience along with a service learning experience. The homes that the students are helping to build are owned by first-time homeowners whom may not have had a chance to own a home under normal circumstances. Habitat for Humanity is a faith-based organization that helps individuals to build there homes by arranging interest-free financing. The average costs of the homes in the Memphis area are about $63,000.00. These homes are financed with a 30-year mortgage which makes the home very affordable. Each homeowner, however, must demonstrate that they are able to repay the loan by going through a somewhat stringent application process. One of the things that is quite rewarding is that HFH helps less fortunate individuals realize the American dream of home ownership. The preamble of our constitution guarantees rights to the “pursuit of happiness”. Pursuit of happiness is interpreted the right to own property.
